In celebration of our 30th year in business, we circulated a poll amongst the staff to get a little insight into their history, experience and interests. Now in our 35th year, we thought we’d pass it around again. The results are below. Ben:

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess? It’s let me find a work/life balance that’s rare in IT. 

What do you enjoy most about working in technology? (or top two or three things) : On-going challenges 

Tell us a fun fact about how you work with technology in your off-time. (projects, hobbies, study, etc) ::  Aside from some gaming, as little as possible 

What was your first computer?  Apple IIGS 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see?   High-speed/low-latency satellite internet and self-sustainable small-scale solar (I’m also open to personal molten-salt reactors). 

 

Doug:  

How long have you worked at Burgess? – Will be 16 years on March 29th 

How long have you worked in Technology? – 25 years or so I did tech work in Highschool and College 

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess? – I get to do new things often. Deal with new people and situations. 

What do you enjoy most about working in technology? (or top two or three things) – From the programming side of things it is determining the best way to tackle a problem people are having. 

What was your first computer? – First computer in the home as an old TRS-80 Model 3. Saving BASIC programming to cassette drive I will not miss. 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? – I am always fascinated about the steady advancement of AI we are making. 

 

Micah:

Burgess is my first technology job but I have worked with technology as a hobby for maybe 9 years before that

The Variety of customers we get to support in their fields.

I enjoy playing video games as well as doing live audio, I also have enjoyed implementing and connecting smart home devices such as Smoke detectors, Lights, and my water heater.

My first personal computer was one I scrounged parts for in the early 2000s 
What future-istic technology would you most like to see? 

Flying cars and hoverbikes but ultimately more realistically Solid State Battery technology

I don’t really have any tech hobbies. I like to woodwork, and play guitar. I built a guitar, is that techy? 

What was your first computer?  

A Commodore 64. 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see?  

A tie between Holodecks, and Transporters. Being able to go anywhere, instantly, would be pretty great.

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? Transporter! 

 

Maggie: 2020 update - Future technology I would like to see is technology used to its full potential, not limited by corruption or greed and used to better the environment and unite people of all languages everywhere. :)

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess? My Team. They are my everything at BTS! Always there to help me out and I hope I am there for them too when they need me! 

What do you enjoy most about working in technology? (or top two or three things) Solving Problems as a team and sharing the sweet success together.  

Tell us a fun fact about how you work with technology in your off-time. (projects, hobbies, study, etc) I have a BAKING blog (sourdoughmaine.com) that I maintain. I also like to make webpages from scratch using JavaScript and Front-End Web Design.

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? Giant Robot to fight and assist with Natural Disasters (like floods, forest fires, and earthquakes)

What was your first computer? Apple IIe 64k RAM dual 5 ¼ disk drives. My first tech project was to add ram up to 128k!!! 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? Space Colonies

How long have you worked at Burgess?  7 days…  But I worked for Burgess from 1998-1999 previously, so really a year and 7 days.

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess?  The diversity of customers and technology used. 

What do you enjoy most about working in technology? (or top two or three things)  Helping people discover new ways to do things with technology. The challenge of constantly learning.  

Tell us a fun fact about how you work with technology in your off-time. (projects, hobbies, study, etc) I have been expanding the smart technology at home.  We use lights, sensors and location based services to automate certain tasks at home. 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? Advances of nano-technology in the battle of currently incurable diseases.

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess? There is always something new to learn.

There is always something to learn and you’re never bored. 

Tell us a fun fact about how you work with technology in your off-time. (projects, hobbies, study, etcI do some video creation and editing, general troubleshooting, and I prefer running Linux on my home computer. 

What was your first computer? Commodore 64 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see?  

I look forward to all vehicles on the road being self-driving. 

 

Tamara:  

How long have you worked at Burgess Computer?  9  years 

How long have you worked in Technology?  Same. Was in hospitality (and a Burgess client) for a decade before that.  

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess? That it’s a work “home” for those who want it to be. That employees are able to grow into new roles that mesh best with their interests and skillsets, myself included.  

What do you enjoy most about working in technology? (or top two or three things)  It’s helpful to be a little more in the know (even as a non-technician) with regard to the leading edge of technology. It’s so ever-changing, it’s easy to get behind. When you work in the tech field, you’re hearing about all the new stuff. I get a kick out of listening to techs talk to each other about geeky computer engineering stuff. It’s like being on an episode of Star Trek at times. Or Big Bang Theory. <giggle> 

Tell us a fun fact about how you work with technology in your off-time. (projects, hobbies, study, etc) I’m a voiceover artist, and technology helps me in recording, editing and delivery of files to my clients. (and of course marketing, coaching and networking). I’m also involved with multiple community groups who use technology to communicate both internally and externally. And we have a smart home, so I can turn up my thermostat, turn off my lights and check on my doggy-cam, all with a phone app.  

What was your first computer? A Brother word processor with a little display. Does that count? I think it does.  

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? Teleportation. I’m not a fan of flying, but I want to see the world.

Matt:

How long have you worked in Technology? Since 1996, but as a child I always played with electronics 

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess? Working with the latest technologies, and solving peoples technology issues. I also enjoying learning from my peers. 

What do you enjoy most about working in technology? (or top two or three things) I enjoy helping people and seeing them satisfied when a problem gets solved. 

Tell us a fun fact about how you work with technology in your off-time. (projects, hobbies, study, etc) I love to play video games with my kids. I also use technology when fixing cars, hunting, or playing guitar. There is always an app to help my hobby. 

What was your first computer? A Gateway 2000, back when they came in the black and white “cow” boxes. I taught myself BASIC computer programming when I was 13 years old on this computer. 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? Self-driving cars. I could get so much more done that way!

What is something you enjoy about working at Burgess?  I like being an owner and taking on the responsibilities that come with that. Helping customers succeed by providing services we sell. It reiterates we’re doing it correctly! 

What do you enjoy most about working in technology? (or top two or three things) How we can influence a customer’s business with technology to help them grow and improve 

Tell us a fun fact about how you work with technology in your off-time. (projects, hobbies, study, etc) . Honestly I don’t do much with technology outside of work, besides honing our services and exploring new. While at work I’m always working in the business so this is my time to work on the business. 

What was your first computer? Windows 3.1 HP laptop 

What future-istic technology would you most like to see? The day we can think what we want to say and it’s written down for us….typing sucks…
